When you use the new dark mode for Word, it not only changes the theme of the toolbar and ribbon, it also changes the writing canvas of the Word document. Dark Mode in MS Word is a compelling new mode that can reassure your eyes and help you work better at night and in low-light situations. However, some users don't like it and want to turn off it. In this article, I will guide you step by step on how to turn off dark mode in MS Word.
Step 1: Open your Microsoft Word Document, click on the "File" menu at the top left corner of the app. Then select "Account" on the left panel in the Word back-end view.
Step 2: On the Account page, click the Office Theme drop-down list and select the theme you want. Colorful, Dark Gray, or White. Since we want to turn off the dark mode, we choose the "White" theme here.
Step 3: After completing the settings, the title bar, ribbon, canvas, border, everything is now white (light mode).
Tip: If you want to fill MS Word with colors, you can also try the "Colorful" theme. It is similar to the "White" theme.
You can also switch from dark mode to light mode from Word Options.
Step 1: Open your MS Word, click on the File menu in the ribbon. Then, in the background view select Options at the bottom of the left panel.
Step 2: Click on the General tab in the left side, scroll down and find "Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office" section, click on the drop-down menu next to "Office Theme" and select "White" as the light mode. Then, click "OK" to apply the setting.
Click on the "View" tab in the top ribbon of MS Word. Then click to "Switch Modes". This will toggle the color of the file. You can switch back to black by clicking on the Switch Modes again.
Note: Switch mode is only available in the Microsoft Word version of Office 365.
If you want to make MS Word use white as the default page color even in dark mode, you can do so in just two steps below.
Step 1: Open your MS Word Document, in the top-left corner, click on File > Options.
Step 2: In the Word Options window, select "General" in the left sidebar. Then in the right pane, scroll down to the "Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office" section; next to the "Office Theme" drop-down menu, check the "Never change the document page color" option. Finally, click "OK" in the bottom right corner to complete the changes.
Step 3: Open an existing MS Word Document or any MS Word Document and you will find it in dark mode with white as the page color.
