Word documents can become corrupted for a number of reasons, preventing you from opening them. For example, missing some parts or contains invalid parts, incorrect document layout and formatting, repeatedly undoing page breaks in documents and computers that stop responding when opening files, etc. In this post, I will share you the most effective solutions to troubleshoot damaged documents in Word 2007-2016.
Step 1: Open a word document, select Draft under the View tab.
Step 2: Click on the File menu, then select Options.
Step 3: In the left panel, click Advanced, and in the right panel, find the Show document content section, select Show picture placeholders and Use draft font in Draft and Outline views.
Step 4: Scroll down to find the General section, uncheck Update automatic links at open option. Click OK to save the changes. Then close your Word document.
Step 5: Open a word document, click on the File Menu, and then choose to Open. Select the corrupted file and select Open. If you can open the file, close the file, then reopen it with Solution 6 and repair the file. Otherwise move to Solution 2.
Step 1: Open a word document, select the File Menu, select Open, and then click on Browse.
Step 2: Select the damaged word file. In the Files of type box, select Recover Text from Any File (*.*). And then click on Open.
Note: Using the "Recover text from any file" converter has its limitations. For instance, the formatting of the file can be lost, and graphics, fields, drawing objects and any other non-text items can be lost.
Step 1: In Word, select the File Menu, select Open, and then click on Browse.
Step 2: Select a damaged document, select the arrow on the Open button, and then select Open and Repair.
Step 1: Open the damaged file in Word. Select File on the ribbon, then click Options.
Step 2: In the left pane, click on Add-ins, in the right pane, in the Manage box, select Template and then click Go.
Step 3: The Document template box will list the templates used for this file. If the listed template is normal, move to step 4. Otherwise, skip to step 5.
Step 4: Close the word document, use the shortcut WIN + E to open the File Explorer and locate the position: %userprofile%\appdata\roaming\microsoft\templates Right-click Normal.dotm and select Rename. Rename it as Oldword.old and then press Enter. Close the File Explorer. Start Word, then open the document.
Step 5: Open the impaired document in Word. Select File on the ribbon and click Options. Click on Add-Ins. In the Manage box, select Template and then select Go. You can refer to Step 2. In the Templates and Add-ins dialog box, click attach.
In the Attach Template, select Normal.dotm, and then select Open.
Click on OK to close the Templates and Add-ins dialog box. And Exit word document.
Step 6: Restart word, select File in the ribbon, and then select Open. Select the damaged document to open.
Step 1: Download and install iSunshare Word Repair Genius.
Step 2: Click the Open button and select the damaged word document.
Step 3: The progress bar will load automatically, and when it's done, a dialog box will pop up that The file is restored! Click OK to continue.
Step 4: You can Save the repaired word document to This PC.
Step 5: After the save is complete, a dialog box will pop up to indicate that the save was successful, click Yes to view the repaired word document.
Step 1: Start Word. Select File, then select Open. Select the damaged file, and then select Open.
Step 2: Select File and choose Save as. Select Browse. In the Save as type, select Rich Text Format (*.rtf). Then click on Save. Finally select File in the ribbon and then select Close.
Step 3: Reopen the document, and then convert the document back to Word file format.
Step 4: Confirm that converting document format resolves the issue. If the behavior persists, try saving the file in a different file format.
