At Apple WWDC24, the launch of Apple Intelligence undoubtedly stood out as one of the biggest highlights. However, as it’s new to us, we may be very curious about it with some questions on Apple AI as follows.
Apple Intelligence is a comprehensive artificial intelligence technology framework integrated into Apple's device ecosystem, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It involves leveraging advanced machine learning algorithms and models to process data, understand user behavior, and provide intelligent responses and recommendations.
Apple Intelligence brings forth a range of impressive AI tools, including:
1.Writing Tools: Apple Intelligence offers enhanced text composition and summarization tools, which provide suggestions for improvement and content summarization, simplifying the writing process. Also, it helps user’s AI-based rewriting, proofreading, and allows to change tone of the specific content.
2. Enhanced Communication: Through intelligent reply features in messaging applications, Apple Intelligence offers quick reply to choose. It prioritizes notifications, ensuring users don't miss important messages, emails, or reminders.
3. Visual Expression: Various image generation and management tools is ready, like Image Playground to enable easy custom images creation and personalized emojis (Genmoji).
4. Siri Integration: Siri has been upgraded through integration with Apple Intelligence. Now, it has a deeper understanding of user preferences and more personalized responses. In other words, it becomes a true personal assistant.
The seamless integration of Apple Intelligence with Apple system facilitates smooth interaction between AI-powered features and native applications like Siri, Mail, Message, and Photos.
1. Education Area: Newly added math note-taking features on iPad and Mac allow users to handwrite problems, and Apple AI will automatically recognize and solves them.
2. Work Efficiency: With Siri assistant, users can conveniently manage schedules, send messages, set reminders, and even automatically generate meeting notes and send emails after meetings.
3. Daily Life: Not only with more convenience and interest when contacting our friends, it also allows us to give full play to our imagination in the creative process. Besides, for travels, Apple Watch with Apple Intelligence can automatically detect new locations and recommend translation functions, making it easy for users to overcome language barriers.
After upgrading, Siri will look entirely different from previous versions.
1. Visual Changes: Firstly, the Siri logo will undergo a transformation. During interactions, the Siri bubble will be replaced by soft, pulsating colored lights along the device edges, which looks very cool and attractive.
2. Response Mechanism: Compared to previous dull responses, the Siri AI will be more like a true human. It can accurately answer user’s consecutive questions through context.
3. Collaborative Features: Siri equipped with Apple Intelligence is able to collaborate across Apple and third-party apps and execute hundreds of tasks seamlessly between different apps. Thus, specific actions withing designated apps is possible.
They are totally different things. Apple Intelligence is developed and launched by Apple, while ChatGPT is by OpenAI. And these two also differ from:
1. Data Source: Apple Intelligence utilizes Apple’s own data sources, while ChatGPT uses a wide range of Internet data through its pretrained models.
2. Use Cases and Functions: Apple Intelligence focuses on integrating intelligent technologies within Apple products and services, whereas ChatGPT is a versatile conversational model applicable across multiple use cases.
3. Data Privacy: Apple is committed to ensuring the privacy of all data through On-device Processing and Private Cloud Compute. On the other hand, OpenAI's ChatGPT may collect user data, which may be used to train the model.
Apple Intelligence primarily performs On-device processing to enhance privacy, but it also inevitably relies on the cloud to accomplish certain specific tasks. This largely depends on the complexity of the task, resource availability, data privacy considerations, and latency requirements.
Private Cloud Compute is used to handle complex tasks that require cloud servers, and the amount of data transmitted is minimal. Its servers are built on Apple Silicon, and the data will never be stored in the cloud.
As for Apple's own Apple Intelligence, the company has mentioned some of the primary measures it takes to protect user privacy. With some mechanisms Apple has implemented to protect user privacy, Apple keep your information private.
Regarding the collaboration with OpenAI, Apple has stated that its integration of ChatGPT includes privacy protection, IP address obfuscation, and no storage requests from Apple Intelligence OpenAI.
Because of some Apple AI compatibility requirements, it only works on specific version with A17 and later, and M-series chips.
Apple Intelligence is compatible with devices including iPhone 15 Pro or newer models that running the A17 pro chip, as well as iPads and Macs equipped with the M1 chip or later versions. Specifically including:
Phones: iPhone15Pro Max A17 Pro, iPhone15Pro A17 Pro
iPad: iPad Pro M1 and later, iPad Air M1 and later
Mac: MacBook Air M1 and later, MacBook Pro M1 and later, iMac M1 and later, Mac mini M1 and later, Mac studio M1 Max and later, Mac Pro M2 Ultra.
Apple Intelligence requires powerful on-device processing capabilities to process multiple tasks on the device itself for prioritizing user privacy. Therefore, it has certain hardware requirements, mainly on following three aspects:
The NPU (Neural Processing Unit), which also know as the Neural Engine, is a processor specifically designed to accelerate neural network computations. Unlike traditional CPU and GPU, the NPU is optimized at the hardware level for AI computations to enhance performance and energy efficiency.
The speed of A17 Pro NPU is 35 TOPS (trillion operations per second), which is about twice the performance of the A16 and A15 chips. A high-speed CPU is essential for running Apple AI, and the chip performance of older iPhone models does not meet this requirement.
The M-series chips also have shown significant improvements in both CPU performance and graphics processing speed. Besides, its built-in Neural Engine boosts machine learning speeds by several times, bringing efficient machine learning processing capabilities.
For example, the new M4 chip features a brand-new NPU with a capacity to perform 38 trillion AI calculations per second, which is up to 60 times faster (a 6000% increase) than the neural engine of the Apple A11 chip.
Android smartphones mostly come equipped with 16GB of high RAM now, while iPhone only have 8GB of RAM in iPhone 15 Pro and Max version. And the previous iPhone versions are only max out at 6GB.
Besides, Apple AI supports all devices from M1 and later, including the low-spec M1 iPad Pro with 8GB RAM and MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM.
Apple AI involves neural networks, leading it to heavily depend on RAM size. Therefore, DRAM is also a factor worth considering.
Apple will optimize its AI capabilities through continuous software updates in order to fully utilize the capabilities of the latest hardware. Thus, some certain AI features or improvements may require the latest iOS version, and older devices may not fully support these updates.
To enable Apple Intelligence after updating your device to iOS 18, you can access Settings, tap Apple Intelligence & Siri, and choose Get Apple Intelligence. Once selected, the on-device Apple Intelligence models will begin downloading (download times may vary). After you get a notification that Apple Intelligence is ready for your device, the Apple Interlligence is activated on your iPhone.
