Apple Intelligence of iOS 18 is deeply integrated within the system and emphasizing the privacy protection at the same time. Unlike traditional AI systems that heavily rely on cloud processing, Apple Intelligence is on-device processing, similar to an AI PC or Copilot+ PC. This means that AI computations, including data analysis and model inference, are conducted directly on the user's device rather than on external servers.
On-device processing enhances privacy protection by minimizing the need to transmit sensitive user data. The local computation ensures that private information remains under the user's control.
This feature requires powerful computing capabilities. That’s why Artificial Intelligence Apple is needed to run on A17 Pro, M1, and newer processors.
As Apple’s press release state: "The underlying principle of Apple Intelligence is to process tasks on the device. But for more complex and demanding requests, Private Cloud Compute will still extend the privacy and security of Apple devices to the cloud to further expanding the intelligent capabilities".
Apple uses secure, dedicated Apple Silicon servers to handle complex tasks that cannot be processed on the device. Additionally, by employing encrypted verification, only servers with public auditable records are allowed to communicate with Apple devices.
Apple ensures that when consumers send data to cloud servers, only the necessary information is transmitted. And the data won't be retained. As Apple AI promises: "Your data will never be stored or accessed by Apple."
The code for Private Cloud Compute is available for independent experts to review and verify its compliance with privacy standards. Apple emphasizes the importance of independent code review to strengthen the security and privacy of its AI systems.
Apple encrypts all data whether entering or leaving its server. In the meantime, Apple guarantees that user input data will not be used as training data for AI models, so users don’t need to worry about sensitive information breach.
Users can choose whether to opt into Apple Intelligence. Over time, Apple will strive to enhance its AI capabilities. Additionally, Apple Intelligence will offer a variety of Apple AI tools for everyday practical use, which will be released as beta versions.
Although AI for apple will be released this fall, its wide use will take time, as many users may need to upgrade their devices to support the new features.
