Virus, spyware and other malware definitions are files that Windows Defender uses to identify malicious or potentially unwanted software in your PC. In other words, Windows Defender depends on the definitions to detect malware and notify you of potential risks. Thus, it is dangerous when the definitions are out of date (see the following picture). For your convenience, this article introduces three methods to update virus and spyware definitions in Windows 8 computer.

3 ways to update virus and spyware definitions in Windows 8/8.1:

Way 1: Update them in the Home settings of Windows Defender.

Step 1: Turn on Windows Defender.

Step 2: In Home settings, click Update button to start updating.

Way 2: Finish virus and spyware definitions update in Update settings of Windows Defender.

In Windows Defender, choose Update and tap Update button to begin updating.

Way 3: Update the definitions in Action Center.

Step 1: Go to Search bar by use of Windows key+F, type action center in the search box, select Settings and click Action Center to open it.

Step 2: Beside Spyware and unwanted software protection (or Virus protection), tap Update now button.
