When you constantly press F8 to enter the safe mode on Windows 8 computer, you may find that the key does not work. But the good news is that you are able to set it as the safe mode key and apply it to enter the black-and-white Advanced Boot Options window with Safe Mode in it. And this article will show you how to set F8 as the safe mode key of Windows 8 step by step.

Step 1: Open the Quick Access Menu and select Command Prompt (Admin) in it, as exhibited in the following screen shot.
FYI, you can press the composite key of WIN key+X to open the Quick Access Menu on the desktop or on the Start menu.
Step 2: Click Yes in User Account Control window.
This step is to allow the Command Prompt (Admin) to make changes to the computer settings.
Step 3: In the Administrator Command Prompt window, input the following command and press Enter.
bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy
Tips: In the command, do use braces (also referred to curly brackets) to enclose "default". Besides, if you want to undo the changes, you can type the command below and click Enter.
bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy standard
After these three steps, F8 key is successfully set as the Windows 8 safe mode key. And you can use it to find the black-and-white Advanced Boot Options interface, as shown in the screen shot below. Then, you can use down arrow to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter to enable safe mode on the computer.
