Sometimes when you connect your USB drive to your computer, the USB drive keeps disconnecting and reconnecting every a few seconds, which results in that you can't normally copy and transfer files with it. It is really annoying. There maybe something wrong with the hardware or the driver. Under this circumstance, you need to make sure whether this USB drive works fine or not with another computer. If it does, there is no problem with your drive. If it doesn't, don't worry. Now let's get started to learn what to do if USB drive keeps disconnecting and reconnecting on Windows 10.
As we all know, there won't be only one USB port on your laptop or desktop computer. So if the USB port that you use keeps disconnecting and reconnecting, why not try connecting the USB drive to another USB port. Your problem may be easily fixed by connecting your drive to a different USB port in some cases. However, if this method doesn't work for you, attempt the following different ways.
If your USB ports keep disconnecting and reconnecting on Windows 10, you can try to reinstall the USB drive or Universal Serial Bus controllers driver. This way may help you solve this problem.
Step 1: Press Windows+X simultaneously and click Device Manager.
Step 2: Go to Universal Serial Bus controllers on the left panel on the Device Manager window. Double click it, look for your USB drive, right click it and then select Uninstall from the drop-down menu.
Note: If your USB drive is a normal one, it will be displayed as a USB Mass Storage Device. If it's USB 3.0 device, it will be shown as USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller.
Step 3: Click OK in the dialog box to confirm to uninstall it. Then reboot your computer with your USB device connected. Windows will install the drivers automatically after restart. Then you can check whether your problem gets resolved or not.
Step 1: Navigate to Device Manager>Universal Serial Bus controllers, right click your USB driver and choose Properties.
Step 2: Switch to Power Management and uncheck the box of Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power. And then click OK.
Step 3: Reboot your computer to check your result.
USB keeps disconnecting and reconnecting? The reason may exist in the power saving feature. Computer is usually configured to turn off USB devices after a while in order to save power. So you can try to sort out the problem by turning off this feature.
Step 1:Press Windows+X at the same time and select Power Options in the menu.
Step 2: Click Change plan settings on the right panel under Preferred plans section.
Step 3: Click Change advanced power settings in the following interface.
Step 4: Look for USB settings and double click it, choose USB selective suspend setting and change the settings from Enabled to Disabled. Click the Apply button and then the OK button to save changes.
Step 5: Restart your computer to see if the USB keeps disconnecting problem has been resolved.
If you are facing some hardware or device issues on Windows 10, you can run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter. It will help you resolve these issues.
Step 1: Go to Settings>Update & Security>Troubleshoot, and then click Hardware and Devices.
Step 2: Then the Hardware troubleshooter will open. You can choose to fix the detected problems automatically or fix only the one's you want. Then click Next to run it.
Step 3: Choose the target one that you want to fix and then click Next button. The Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter will try to help you repair it for you.
Step 1: Open "This PC/Computer", right click the USB drive which you want to check and click Properties.
Step 2: In the Properties panel, choose Tool tab and click Check button under the Error checking section.
Step 3: Click Scan and repair drive to scan and repair your drive. And then do the operation according to the onscreen instructions.
The issue of USB disconnecting and reconnecting may be resulted from the fault of the USB drive itself or problem with the file system. So you can fix the issue using "CHKDSK" or "System File Checker". No matter which one you try, first of all, go to start menu and enter "cmd" to launch Command Prompt, then:
In the Command Prompt, enter "chkdsk drive letter: /r /f" command, replace "drive letter" in the command to the drive you need to fix and press Enter. Finally reconnect the USB drive to check the problem.
In the Command Prompt enter "sfc / scannow" command and press Enter to execute it. After the scanning process is finished, restart your computer to see if it works.
