As a Windows user, you might be familiar with GPT and MBR which are 2 partition styles. When you install a new hard disk into your Windows computer, you need to initialize the new disk for usage. In other words, you have to set the disk running in GPT or MBR format. However, does it mean that you can't convert the disk style from GPT to MBR once you initialize it? Of course not, you still can change a GPT disk to an MBR disk in Windows 10/8/7 with the 3 free ways below.
Before you change the GPT disk to the MBR disk, you have to back up data of each partition in the GPT disk.
Step 1: Delete all the partitions(volumes) in the target GPT disk by right-clicking its volumes and choosing Delete Volume.
Step 2: Right-click the GPT disk and click Convert to MBR Disk.
Step 1: Run the Command Prompt(cmd) as an administrator.
Step 2: Input diskpart in the shown CMD.
Step 3: Type list disk and you can see all the disks in your computer.
Step 4: Enter select disk [disk number of the target GPT disk].
Step 5: Type clean in the prompt.
Step 6: Input convert mbr to finish the change.
Besides the Windows built-in programs, you can also choose a third-party tool to help to change the partition style. When searching on the Internet, many free partition management software will be displayed for you. With the help of the tool, the style conversion can be realized with simple clicks.
