How to Put Your iPhone in Ring or Silent Mode

By Hally | Last Updated

The vibration function on iPhone is designed to alert you when there are incoming texts, phone calls, emails and others new messages. Two modes of vibration are offered: Ring mode and Silent mode. In Ring mode, you can hear ringtones and alerts while you can hear nothing in Silent mode. But you can still hear sounds while playing music or enjoying videos.

Whether you're in a meeting, at the movies, or just want some peace and quiet, knowing how to quickly switch between ring and silent modes is crucial. This guide will walk you through the simple steps to turn on or off the ring mode on your iPhone.

Ring Mode vs. Silent Mode

Before diving into the steps, it’s helpful to understand the difference between ring mode and silent mode:

  1. Ring Mode: In this mode, your iPhone will play sounds for incoming calls, messages, notifications, and other alerts.
  2. Silent Mode: In this mode, your iPhone will vibrate instead of making sounds for these alerts. The phone still receives calls and notifications, but without any audible alerts.

Turn On/Off Ring Mode Using the Side Switch

The easiest way to toggle between ring and silent modes on your iPhone is by using the physical side switch, located on the upper-left side of your device.

Step 1. Locate the Side Switch: The switch is positioned above the volume buttons on the left side of your iPhone.

Step 2. Switch to Silent Mode:

Push the switch down towards the back of your iPhone. When the switch is down, you’ll see an orange indicator next to it, meaning your iPhone is in silent mode. Your iPhone will also briefly display a bell icon with a slash through it on the screen, confirming that silent mode is on.

Step 3. Switch to Ring Mode:

Slide the switch on your iPhone upwards toward the front. When the switch is in this position, the orange indicator will disappear, indicating that your iPhone is now in ring mode. You’ll see a bell icon without a slash on the screen, indicating that ring mode is activated.

Switch the Mode from Settings (Only Works on Some iPhones)

In some iOS versions, you can directly change the ring mode to silent mode in Settings.

Step 1. Access Settings: For iPhone 7 and later, you can tap Settings and choose Sound & Haptics. For older iPhone, go to Settings > Sound.

Step 2. Choose the mode:

Under VIBRATE section, you will see two options: Vibrate on Ring and Vibrate on Silent. If you want to turn on one mode, you can just tap the button on the right of the mode to be green. Also, you can disable it by tapping it again and make the button in white. If you tap the two button to white, the vibration is turn off and your iPhone will not vibrate any more.

Also, you can change the sounds and vibration patterns, such as the Ringtone. You can choose the one you like to set as the ringtone. It is the same to the alert tone.

Adjust Ring and Alert Volumes via Control Center

In addition to the side switch, you can manage how loud your ring and alerts are via the Control Center:

Step 1. Access the Control Center: On iPhones with Face ID (iPhone X and later), swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen. If your iPhone has a Home button, you can access the feature by swiping up from the bottom edge of the screen.

Step 2. Adjust the Volume: Use the volume slider to increase or decrease the alert volume.

Note that this only adjusts the volume; it doesn’t change the mode from ring to silent.

Tips on Ring and Silent Mode

Do Not Disturb Mode: If you don’t want to be disturbed at all, you can enable Do Not Disturb mode from the Control Center. This silences all calls and notifications while allowing you to make exceptions for certain contacts.

Vibration Settings: You can customize whether your iPhone vibrates in ring mode, silent mode, or both by going to Settings > Sounds & Haptics.

Using Siri: You can ask Siri to turn on or off Do Not Disturb, but note that Siri cannot directly toggle the physical side switch for ring/silent mode.

Conclusions

Knowing how to quickly switch between ring and silent modes on your iPhone is a small but essential skill that enhances your control over your device's alerts. With these simple steps, you can ensure that your iPhone always behaves the way you want, whether you need to be discreet or stay notified
