Here I will tell you some information about SuperFetch, including what's SuperFetch, its pros and cons and should you disable it or not.
SuperFetch is one of the functions of Windows Vista in 2007 and then it becomes a build-in service of all other Windows versions. SuperFetch could preload the most frequently used programs into available RAM space in advance. In this way, those applications will start faster when you want to run them, which improves the computer performance.
While SuperFetch is not necessary for the normal operation of your computer, it is useful in most cases. SuperFetch is an enhancer for a computer's performance. It has the following advantages:
1. It can preload your most frequently used programs into the available RAM space ahead of time. The ones you use the most are likely to load much faster after a few days.
2. It helps to start up frequently used programs quickly, thus increasing the speed of the computer and saving time.
3. Even if you want to open less commonly used software, SuperFetch automatically frees up enough RAM space for the software.
4. It will automatically shut down and start itself according to the situation. When it recognizes that the SSD of the computer is fast enough to offset the advantages SuperFetch provides, it can automatically turn off. When a slow SSD is detected, the SuperFetch function is automatically enabled.
Despite those pros, SuperFetch may cause problems. It has the following disadvantages:
1. Since SuperFetch runs in the background of the Windows system most of the time, it takes up some system resources all the time.
2. The primary purpose of SuperFetch is to speed up application load times for running hard disk drives (HDDs), with little effect on application load times for running solid-state drives (SSDs).
3. More seriously, SuperFetch may lead to high CPU usage, excessive memory usage, and hard disk crashes, etc. This may even happen to computers with fast SSDs.
You can consider disabling it if you don't mind your computer taking a little longer to boot up. Or if you are going to run many apps that would occupy lots of memory, turn off SuperFetch would be considerable. When you aren't sure whether to disable it, you can stop it first to check the computer performance. If there is no improvement, it's recommended to restart it. You can close SuperFetch (SysMain in Windows 10) in the ways below:
Step 1. Press Windows key and type services. Then press Enter to open the Services interface.
Step 2. Find SuperFetch on the list. Its name is SysMain in Windows 10.
Step 3. Right-click it and choose Stop.
